4th Grade - English Language Arts
MAJOR STANDARDS AND OBJECTIVES • Determine story structure (problem and solution), setting, and discuss character traits when reading a story, poem, or drama. • Identify text structure of non-fiction stories. (Problem/solution, chronology, cause/effect, comparison) • Identify nonfiction text features: headings, diagrams. Determine the theme of a story, drama, or poem, and discuss similar themes across different stories. • Recognize and correct incomplete sentences. Correctly use relative adverbs and relative pronouns. • Write a narrative essay complete with characters, setting, dialogue, problem and solution.
MAJOR ASSIGNMENTS AND/OR PROJECTS • Book character project. Pick a character from your favorite book, and complete attached outline. Examples are provided in class. Due Sept. 27 •
FIELD TRIPS PLANNED • No field trips planned.
THINGS YOU CAN DO AT HOME TO HELP YOUR CHILD:
When reading with your child, ask them the major story elements. • Write a descriptive paragraph using spelling words. Have your child read aloud 20 minutes a day.
